Two facts are directly related to each other - frequent diesel poisoning and a colossal increase in the use of vehicles.
In addition, intoxication with this substance occurs among housewives who use it as a solvent, and among those who work at oil refining plants.
Ways and causes of poisoning
In relation to air, diesel fuel has a high density, and therefore, evaporating quickly and abundantly, accumulates in the lower part of the room.
Therefore, the most common way of getting intoxicated with diesel fuel is the respiratory system. People inhale its accumulated vapors, and after a while they develop symptoms of intoxication.
Less often, but still, diesel poisoning occurs externally (the toxic substance penetrates the skin or mucous membranes) and by ingestion of the substance (usually completely by accident).
And it is extremely rare that diesel poisoning occurs due to a person’s mental illness, when he cannot control and regulate his actions.
A child can become poisoned by this substance if the rules for storing poisons in the house are violated and the child is not properly supervised.
Symptoms of poisoning
The clinical picture of an acute form of diesel poisoning (mild or moderate severity) will look very similar to the picture that occurs during severe intoxication:
- Stupor and slight clouding of consciousness may occur;
- A person experiences strong psycho-emotional arousal, a euphoric state;
- The skin all over the body becomes covered with cold sweat;
- Increased activity is sharply replaced by severe general weakness;
- Chanted speech;
- The gait becomes shaky and unstable.
Also, when inhaling diesel vapor, irritation of the respiratory system may occur, manifested through frequent sneezing, obsessive coughing (as a rule, the cough is dry and often ends in vomiting).
Nausea and repeated vomiting that does not bring relief are also considered one of the signs of diesel fuel poisoning.
First aid for poisoning
If signs of intoxication appear, you should definitely call an ambulance and hospitalize the victim.
Before the doctor arrives, it is very important to provide first aid.
Its activities are as follows:
- Provide the victim with access to fresh air.
- Carrying out detoxification: drinking plenty of fruit juices, tea with lemon, taking sorbents (activated carbon, enterosgel, and so on).
- Taking nootropic drugs to improve blood microcirculation in the brain.
- If toxins enter the stomach, rinse with saline solution or plain warm water.
Health care
In a hospital hospital, the victim is prescribed strict bed rest. Detoxification therapy is carried out using infusions of glucose solutions and isotonic solutions. This allows you to speed up the process of removing toxic toxins from the body.
Then symptomatic therapy is carried out, since there is no specific antidote for diesel fuel.
After the manipulations and consultation with a doctor, for mild to moderate poisoning, therapy can be continued at home.
