How does activated carbon work and how is it beneficial for the body?
At the initial stage of production, suitable raw materials are placed in a special chamber in which there is no oxygen and processed at high temperatures.
To create a large number of pores that provide high absorbency, the activation method is used. This method involves treating coal with certain substances or steam against a background of strong heat. This results in a substance with a porous structure. When it enters the digestive system, activated carbon prevents the absorption of toxins, drugs, phenol derivatives, alkaloids, metal salts and other substances into the blood. This is precisely the benefit of activated carbon. This effect of the drug allows you to eliminate the symptoms of drug overdose and other types of intoxication.
In addition to medications and toxins, activated carbon can absorb gases. At the same time, the tablets do not irritate the mucous membranes. The drug is not absorbed by the intestines and is excreted unchanged from the body. The withdrawal period for the tablets is one day.
To achieve maximum effect, it is necessary to take the drug in the first hours after signs of intoxication are detected.
Instructions for the use of activated carbon for children prohibit the use of the medicine for:
- individual intolerance;
- lesions of the gastrointestinal tract in the form of ulcers (gastric or duodenal ulcers);
- bleeding in the gastrointestinal tract;
- combining coal with antitoxic drugs.
It is worth considering that there are pathological conditions that require immediate medical consultation. Self-medicating while taking this medicine is dangerous.
The main advantage of activated carbon is its naturalness. The drug is obtained by burning organic materials (charcoal and coconut shells) followed by specific processing.
This product works perfectly as a sorbent, thanks to which it is actively used to cleanse the body and remove toxins, allergens and histamines from it. Activated carbon owes its enterosorbing properties to its porous structure. Its numerous pores have a huge internal area, allowing the product to easily absorb, bind and retain various substances:
- toxic elements and poisons that are products of the vital activity of viruses and bacteria;
- drugs and alkaloids;
- salts of heavy metals;
- gases;
- allergens.
Active particles absorb all harmful radicals located in the subcutaneous layer. Then, in its original form, the drug is excreted from the body along with bowel movements.
The main beneficial properties of coal include:
- removal of waste or harmful substances;
- removal of intoxication;
- general cleansing effect;
- normalizing the functioning of the stomach and intestines;
- eliminating gases and relieving bloating;
- improving the functioning of the gallbladder and liver;
- cleansing the epidermis of blackheads and pimples, reducing greasiness.
Being an effective universal sorbent, carbon is often used in complex treatment. It effectively helps cope with:
- severe intoxication due to diseases of a viral or bacterial nature;
- bloating and flatulence;
- poisoning;
- rotavirus;
- disorders of the stomach;
- infections in the intestines.
The sorbent is used for viral and bacterial poisoning (for more details, see the article: sorbents used for poisoning in children).
Activated carbon is also often prescribed for various allergies. Taking it gives a positive result when:
- Food allergies (intolerance to certain foods).
- Seasonal rhinitis and conjunctivitis (for example, a negative reaction to flowering).
- Quincke's edema.
- Bronchial asthma accompanied by allergic reactions.
- Allergies to drugs (negative reaction to the action of a certain component in the composition of the drug).
- Atopic dermatitis. This is an inflammatory process that develops on the skin and is chronic. Characterized by itching, swelling and eczema.
- Cold or regular urticaria. This is a reaction to exposure to cold, damp air. It manifests itself in the form of rashes, itching, pain, swelling and large flat blisters in those places that come into contact with an external irritant.
Features of use for poisoning
The body of a small child is sensitive, symptoms of poisoning may occur after exposure to hazardous substances. It is necessary to urgently call an ambulance; acute intoxication requires hospital treatment under the supervision of specialists in order to avoid dehydration and negative consequences. To maintain a stable condition, you need to provide the patient with a sufficient amount of water, take a proven and high-quality drug that can quickly remove toxic toxins before they enter the circulatory system.
Reasons for using activated carbon as a medicine:
- food poisoning from expired products;
- intestinal infections;
- intoxication with toxic substances;
- dysentery;
- salmonellosis;
- medication overdose;
- allergic reactions;
- flatulence;
- cleansing the intestines of food debris.
Activated carbon is made from coal, charcoal, and peat. Under the influence of high temperatures and vacuum, finely porous carbon with high adsorption and catalysis properties is obtained. The binding and removal of toxins is due to the fact that the composition contains positively charged oxygen, which attracts toxic substances.
Contraindications to the use of coal in children
The advantage of this product is that it can be given to the youngest, even children under one year old. However, the children's body is more susceptible and sensitive to the effects of medications. For this reason, it is very important to give activated charcoal to children, following the instructions and dosage.
Activated carbon can be given even to infants, the main thing is to strictly follow the dosage
Dosage is always calculated relative to the child's body weight. A single dose is defined as 0.05 grams of a substance per 1 kilogram of weight. The maximum daily intake is 0.2 grams per kilogram. For example, for children weighing 15 kg, you cannot give more than 3 grams of coal per day. It is advisable to take the drug three times.
Activated carbon tablets can only be given to newborns and one-year-old infants in dissolved form. To do this, they need to be crushed and diluted with 50-150 ml of water. Another way is to give the drug in another form of release, for example, in the form of a powder, paste or granules. A child under 6-7 years old should not buy capsules to prevent the child from choking.
It is equally important to observe the interval between doses. It must be at least 2 hours. It is also not recommended to take the product for longer than 14 days.
Dosage at different ages
Let's figure out how many activated carbon tablets a child needs to drink. If poisoning or intoxication is diagnosed , then the normal dose of activated carbon for children is 3-4 grams per use.
One tablet weighs 0.5 grams. When taken orally, you can proceed from a simple formula: 1 tablet - per 10 kilograms of weight.
To do this, you will need to grind the tablet to a powder and add a small amount of water at room temperature.
You can simply put them in your mouth, drink a sip of water, hold everything in your mouth for a while and swallow.
If gastric lavage is necessary, then you need to crush the tablets to obtain one tablespoon of powder and dilute it in 1 liter of boiled water. After rinsing, the resulting product must be drunk.
Contraindications to the use of coal in children
Giving activated charcoal to infants is allowed only according to medical prescriptions. Since it will be difficult for a one-month-old baby to take the pill, the doctor may recommend using analogues that are available in a form convenient for children. From the age of two months, the drug is allowed to be used as an adjuvant for newborns with colic. However, you should not abuse charcoal tablets.
Treatment with tablets should be accompanied by drinking plenty of fluids
The dose in tablets should correspond to the age and weight of the baby:
- Infants and children under one year of age are allowed to drink 1–2 tablets of charcoal per day. The medicine is dissolved in water and given to the baby in liquid form.
- One-year-old babies and children under 3 years of age are advised to use 3-4 tablets per day.
- At the age of 3–6 years, 6 tablets per day are allowed.
- From 6 years of age, the substance is used according to weight. You are allowed to use up to 10 tablets per day.
Coal is sold in tablet form with a dosage of 250 mg. Pediatricians prescribe it at the rate of 50 mg per kg of baby’s weight. If a 4-year-old child weighs 16 kg, the dose per day is 800 mg (16 times 50), you need to take 3.5 tablets. In case of severe poisoning, doctors increase the dosage to 70 mg per kilogram of body weight (4.5 tablets for a child weighing 16 kg).
The duration of therapy is 3–15 days, depending on the child’s condition and medical prescriptions.

For burns
Treatment with activated carbon is effective for extensive burns, as well as against the background of an increased content of nitrogen or bilirubin in the blood. Such clinical symptoms are characteristic of renal failure and some pathological processes in the liver. Enterosorbent will help remove excess bilirubin and toxins.
But is it possible to prescribe activated carbon to children 2 years old? We have reviewed the indications for use of the product, and we will look into the age restrictions below.
How to use
Activated carbon is produced in the form of tablets, capsules, powder or paste. The choice of medication form for a child is determined by his age. The fastest-acting solution is a suspension (not to be confused with a suspension) - a powder mixed with water. It is very easy to prepare it yourself: you need to grind the tablet into powder, add a little water and give it to the child from a spoon. It is preferable to give a suspension of coal to children under two years of age, while older children can be given a capsule or tablet.
If there is no improvement after treatment with activated charcoal, consult a doctor. Don't hesitate, diarrhea is dangerous due to dehydration! In case of food poisoning, before using charcoal, it would be good to perform a gastric lavage. It is very important to give your child as much to drink as possible. Treatment with activated carbon for poisoning should be carried out for three to seven days.
Do not be alarmed if, during treatment with activated charcoal, your child's stool turns black. This is the norm.
If activated charcoal is overused, side effects may occur; constipation most often occurs in children. Therefore, monitor your diet during treatment and strictly adhere to the dosage prescribed by your doctor.
Recommendations for use
Activated carbon is a good drug, but it should not be used often. The following rules must also be observed:
- Children should not consume activated charcoal on an empty stomach. The medicine is able to absorb not only toxic components, but also beneficial substances in the intestines. The instructions for charcoal tablets indicate that they can be taken 1.5-2 hours before meals or 1.5-2 hours after.
- In case of poisoning, the use of charcoal for diarrhea or vomiting is not sufficient. In such cases, the medicine is combined with other drugs. It is prohibited to use the substance for longer than 3–5 days without medical prescription. If the situation has not changed during this time, the baby becomes worse and requires immediate hospitalization.
- Tablets can be taken to treat allergies and chronic diseases. The duration of therapy for such indications is 2 weeks; in this case, a visit to the doctor is mandatory.
During treatment with the drug, it is recommended to give the child water frequently to avoid constipation.

Interaction with other drugs
Acute intoxication is subject to complex treatment in order to qualitatively eliminate the problem of malaise, accompanied by unpleasant symptoms. The doctor prescribes several medications aimed at combating toxins and waste. Activated carbon removes beneficial microelements along with toxic substances. To ensure that prescribed antibiotics and probiotics take effect in a timely manner, you should take the charcoal sorbent 1 hour before or after taking other medications.
Storage
It is important to store the drug separately from volatile drugs and nutritional supplements, since carbon is a sorbent, and it is able to absorb all the components that are released into the air by such drugs.
Activated carbon is an effective remedy that is often used in pediatrics. But with the expansion of the pharmaceutical market, doctors regularly change this drug to its modern analogues, which are no less effective. Some of them have a large list of side effects and contraindications. Its versatility and minimal side effects make charcoal tablets an indispensable medicine in pediatrics.
Black coal tablets, which are in every home medicine cabinet, are rightfully classified as first aid. The instructions for use of the drug contain more than twenty diseases for which the doctor prescribes activated carbon for children. This is due to the unique ability of the drug to absorb and deactivate any toxins, gases, heavy metal salts, microorganisms, and then remove them out.
When a doctor prescribes charcoal: indications for use
The drug is given to children if:
- Diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain - symptoms of poisoning
- Flatulence, colic - especially important for infants
- Poisoning of any kind
- Salmonellosis or dysentery
- Allergy
- Liver diseases - hepatitis, cirrhosis
- Gastritis
- Asthma
Despite the apparent safety of activated carbon, the medicine is considered only as a first aid remedy. Only a doctor can prescribe the drug on an ongoing basis.
Contraindications
Activated charcoal is not suitable for a child or teenager who has the following conditions:
- Dysbacteriosis - the medicine is able to adsorb the remains of beneficial microflora
- Stomach or duodenal ulcer
- Bleeding from the gastrointestinal tract
The drug is excluded if it is individually intolerant and is not given together with antitoxic drugs.
Release form and storage methods
Since the drug has increased adsorbing capacity, it must be stored away from medications and products, and also ensure minimal contact with air.
How to give coal to children
The instructions for use do not prohibit giving the drug to children at any age. This should be done an hour or two before or after a meal - the stomach should be empty. You should not combine charcoal with other medications, as this may reduce their effectiveness. Children under 3 years old are given a liquid solution.
The following dosage of the drug per day is recommended for symptoms of poisoning or intoxication, taking into account the standard dosage form - 0.25 g tablets:
- Infants up to one year - 1-2 tablets
- Ages from 1 to 3 years - 2-4 tablets
- Ages from 3 to 6 years - 4-6 tablets
- Over 6 years old - 10-12 tablets, taking into account the child’s weight
If other forms of the drug are used, then it is recommended to give 0.05 g of coal per 1 kg of weight.
Elimination of intoxication with charcoal is never carried out for more than 3 days. If symptoms persist, you should immediately consult a doctor.
Side effects
Children may experience nausea, constipation, or diarrhea. Long-term use of the drug can provoke the following complications:
- Reduced blood pressure, body temperature, sugar levels
- Lead to calcium deficiency and hypovitaminosis
- Cause blockage of blood vessels with blood clots
If any side effects occur, the drug should be stopped.
Overdose
Analogues of activated carbon
These include drugs such as Polysorb, Carbopect, Sorbex, Lopedium, Carbactin, Ultra-Adsorb. In the absence of coal, doctors recommend using Smecta or Enterosgel for the child.
Our specialist comments
There is no need to be afraid that your child’s stool turns black after taking activated charcoal - this is normal. To avoid constipation during treatment, you need to give children more to drink. A sufficient amount of water in the body will help quickly get rid of toxins - remove them with urine.
What to do in case of food poisoning?
Before giving activated charcoal to children, parents are eager to understand what kind of medicine this is, will it be safe, for example, for infants under one year old, how long is it recommended to give the medicine? Coal tablets are produced in the form of black tablets, packed in paper without cells. Activated carbon tablets consist of carbon with small pores, which have undergone special treatment at a temperature of 1 thousand degrees.
At what age is it allowed?
The instructions for use say that the sorbent, and the drug belongs to this group of drugs, is approved for use among children from the first days of birth.
Therefore, a pediatrician can prescribe Activated Carbon to a baby immediately after birth. In case of poisoning, the medication can be used both among infants and at an older age. What happens if you eat too much of the drug? Overdose occurs in cases where the patient has taken a number of tablets that significantly exceeds the dosage specified in the instructions for use. In this case, the following manifestations may develop:
- nausea;
- vomit;
- weakness;
- loose stools;
- loss of appetite;
- sleep disturbance.
As a rule, the described symptoms go away on their own after a few days. Help is provided in the form of plenty of fluids and symptomatic therapy.
Chronic overdose is considered more dangerous. It develops due to prolonged use of the drug. As already mentioned, the instructions for use state that you cannot take the tablets for more than 14 days. If used for too long, there is a risk of removing beneficial components such as potassium, magnesium, and calcium from the body. This can lead to the development of cardiovascular diseases, dysbiosis, decreased immunity and other complications.
If a chronic overdose is detected, a course of treatment with vitamin preparations should be carried out. In addition, you must follow a diet that will help compensate for the loss of beneficial microelements.
The instructions for using activated carbon for children contain information on exactly how to use the drug in different cases. The dosage of activated carbon for a child is calculated based on body weight, taking into account age. For 1 kg of weight, 0.05 grams of medicine is taken.
After vomiting, activated charcoal is used for children over three years old three times a day, 2–4 tablets per dose. A single dose of charcoal for a child with diarrhea is increased to 4–5 tablets.
In case of poisoning:
- For children under 3 years of age, only the doctor calculates the dosage of the drug;
- children 3–7 years of age are prescribed 5 grams (20 tablets) 3 times a day;
- 7–14 years old – 7 grams three times a day.
Pediatrician E. Komarovsky believes that the daily dose of charcoal for a child over 7 years old varies from 30 to 100 grams, which is equivalent to 60-200 tablets.
Instructions for use
The absorbent properties of the medicine allow it to be used for poisoning, diarrhea, and intestinal infections. This drug combines reasonable cost, effectiveness and has almost no side effects. The main principle when taking: maintaining the correct dosage. The instructions for use say that it is recommended to continue treatment for three days; if activated carbon does not help, then most likely the child has a complication or a serious exacerbation of the disease. In such cases, it is recommended to consult a doctor for advice.
In case of poisoning, the amount of medicine needed is calculated by multiplying 0.05 by the weight in kilograms. The dose of the drug for a baby weighing ten kilograms should be no more than 0.5 grams. The amount of the calculated drug is divided into equal portions and drunk within 24 hours. If the poisoning of the body is severe, then the course can be extended to five days until the patient’s condition improves.
For diarrhea and vomiting caused by stale food, pathogenic bacteria entering the body, dysbacteriosis, and gastrointestinal infections, it is recommended to give activated charcoal, which normalizes stool. In these cases, drink from one to three grams of the medicine (depending on weight), and then drink a large amount of water so that the body does not become dehydrated.
What are the dangers of uncontrolled use of activated carbon? The doctor answers
Doctors have to deal with the consequences of overdose, improper use, and rarely with allergic manifestations.
Passion for weight loss advertising leads patients to persistent atonic constipation and partial intestinal obstruction. Doctors are categorically against this direction. Some people are confident in the complete cleansing of the body with charcoal; they take it during and after acute respiratory viral infections and influenza. There is no “cleansing” in this case. The human condition in the recovery period requires vitamins and immunomodulators. And coal retains in the intestines and prevents beneficial drugs and substances from food from being absorbed.
There are many symptomatic remedies to relieve bloating; charcoal tablets are an outdated and inconvenient remedy to use. Their use should be recommended as first aid for poisoning. The advantage is considered to be a long shelf life, suitable uncomplicated storage conditions, and inclusion in a home medicine cabinet.
If activated carbon is needed, then the optimal dosage is selected. It is not suitable for everyone due to the large number of tablets. The drug is suitable for emergency treatment of poisoning. If you have unclear vomiting or diarrhea, the better solution is to consult a doctor and find out the cause. No one has yet been able to cure the disease with coal. Overweight people need serious dietary restrictions and physical activity, and not the pursuit of advertising.
Activated carbon is prescribed to children as an intestinal sorbent. It has the ability to bind and remove various toxic compounds from the hollow structures of the gastrointestinal tract. This is due to the high adsorption of compounds on the surface of the compound molecules. It also has slight catalytic activity, due to which it contributes to the breakdown of some toxic compounds.
Overdose
1. Nausea and vomiting.
2. Weakness.
3. Intense and frequent diarrhea.
4. Pain in the head.
Due to the fact that activated carbon is not absorbed into the gastrointestinal tract, symptomatic treatment is recommended in case of overdose. An overdose can become chronic if the drug is given to a child for more than two weeks. This condition can lead to exhaustion, intestinal dysbiosis and a decrease in the body’s immune forces. For treatment, maintenance therapy is prescribed, aimed at replenishing the missing substances.
In what situations is it prescribed to children?
Among children, activated carbon is used from birth. Treatment is carried out as a complex therapy for the following diseases:
- in case of poisoning of the body with pathogenic substances during dysentery;
- for the treatment of diseases of allergic origin;
- for the purpose of removing toxins from foodborne infections;
- for dyspeptic disorders of the digestive system (vomiting, belching, flatulence, diarrhea);
- to cleanse the body during drug poisoning;
- in case of metabolic disorders;
- in case of intoxication of the body with alkaloids, salts of heavy metals, as well as psychoactive substances.
Despite the apparent safety, therapy for children under three years of age should be carried out under the strict supervision of a physician. This is especially true for newborn babies.
Medicine dosage
Activated carbon is approved for use by children of any age category. It should be taken an hour or two before meals or after it - on an empty stomach. Also, its use should not be combined with the use of other medications - this can significantly reduce their effectiveness. All other nuances of use are decided by the doctor individually depending on the disease.
It is recommended to take the sorbent on an empty stomach
In case of poisoning
In case of poisoning, gastric lavage is often required. In this case, the treatment process with charcoal can be divided into two stages. First you need to drink one tablespoon of powder or crushed tablets diluted in half a liter of water. Repeated rinsing is carried out according to a similar scheme with dilution in two glasses of water.
How long therapy will last depends on the severity and time of onset of signs of improvement. If the poisoning was severe, then the course of treatment is from 3 to 5 days. Compliance with the dosage is also important. You should not exceed the daily norm. It should be divided into approximately equal portions. However, at the beginning you can give more of the drug, and next time - less.
For diarrhea and vomiting
Diarrhea, loose stools and vomiting are quite common phenomena that parents encounter, regardless of the age of the child (see also: how to stop a child’s vomiting at home?). The main reasons that can lead to such symptoms include:
- entry of harmful microorganisms into the mouth through dirty hands, which leads to various types of digestive disorders;
- dysbacteriosis;
- intestinal infection.
It will also not help if diarrhea is a consequence of allergies or a chronic gastrointestinal disease. In other cases, this drug can normalize loose stools and stop diarrhea.
For severe diarrhea, you need to give from 1 to 3 grams of the product. The tablets should be washed down well to avoid dehydration, since with diarrhea, the body loses a lot of fluid when taking charcoal.
For allergies
Goal of therapy | Dosage | Reception features | Course duration, days |
Food allergies or hives | According to age | The daily dose is taken at a time in the morning. You should not eat or drink for three hours after taking it. | 14 |
Other types of allergies | Children – one tablet three times a day | 2-4 courses can be prescribed per year. | 14 |
Cleansing | Prescribed by a doctor | Reception is carried out 2 hours after lunch. Drinking plenty of fluids is recommended. | 10 |
Consolidation of the effect: two stages | Maximum and minimum daily dose per child | Drink one drink in the morning. | The first stage – 5-6, the second – six months |
The dosage of the sorbent is directly related to the baby’s weight, but pediatricians say you should not give more than 15 mg of absorbent per day. It is better to take the drug three times a day, do this 2 hours before meals or two hours after eating. This rule is connected with the strong absorbing effect of activated carbon, because you can give it immediately after lunch, only the medicine will absorb all the useful minerals obtained from food and remove it with feces.
- Children under 12 months of age are given 1–2 crushed tablets;
- Children aged 1–3 years are recommended to take 2–4 tablets;
- For children aged three to six years, the dosage increases from 4 to 6 tablets;
- For schoolchildren aged 6 to 12 years, it is recommended to take the medicine in an amount of 10 to 12 tablets per day.
Before treatment, it is necessary to consult a doctor, who will decide at his own discretion how much medication to take to treat the disease.
Rules and schemes for taking activated carbon
Your doctor will tell you how to drink activated carbon in a particular case. We will provide clarifications and additions to the instructions caused by vital needs and situations. Schemes of use have been developed and confirmed by practice.
In case of food poisoning, the best effect will occur if you use the tablets in the first 12 hours after consuming a suspicious product. During this period, patients usually experience nausea, vomiting, frequent diarrhea, stomach pain, fever, and weakness. In the absence of vomiting, it is more convenient for an adult to immediately take 3-4 tablets, chew and swallow them, and drink at least a glass of water.
When vomiting begins, taking pills is impossible. You need to crush or grind them to a powder, dilute them in a liter of boiled water and use the suspension for gastric lavage. The product will begin to act in 20 minutes. Then, based on the effectiveness, you can calculate the subsequent dosage for the day.
In case of a hangover, before the start of the feast, a person who tends to forget about the norms of alcohol and his own capabilities is recommended to drink 6-7 tablets of coal (with a weight of 70 kg) a few hours in order to prevent it. Before sitting down at the table, you must additionally take 2 more tablets.
If a hangover syndrome develops in the morning, then on an empty stomach it is better to drink a suspension of 6-8 tablets in warm water. The effect will come faster.
While waiting for the result, you need to take into account the amount of heavy meat and fatty foods you ate the day before. It delays the elimination of toxins and makes it difficult for the liver to break down ethanol. Therefore, in the absence of diarrhea, it is recommended to do a cleansing enema.
Attention! Using other medications (for headaches, hepatoprotectors) simultaneously with activated carbon to eliminate hangover symptoms will significantly reduce their effect.
For the same reason, it makes no sense to add other sorbents (Polysorb, Enterosgel) to any treatment regimen. If a person needs to take medication, the interval with the use of activated carbon should be at least two hours.
For the treatment of food and drug allergies, charcoal is prescribed 2-4 tablets three times a day before meals for a course of 2 weeks.
The drug does not work in case of an allergic reaction or an overdose of a drug administered intramuscularly or intravenously.
If you have bloating, it is recommended to take 1 tablet of charcoal three times a day for about a week.
In cases of diarrhea, the drug is prescribed depending on the cause, severity of the condition, age and weight of the patient. Adults and children over 10 years of age can take up to 32 tablets per day, evenly distributing them every 2 hours. Younger children are allowed to take 1 tablet per 15 kg of weight, observing breaks for daytime and night sleep.
There is information about activated carbon helping with weight loss. Endocrinologists consider it ineffective. We will provide diagrams for curious readers. There are 3 options for “losing weight with charcoal”:
- 1 - drink a single dosage before lunch or dinner for a month (for example, a person weighing 90 kg needs to drink 9 tablets at once),
- 2 - every day for a month in the morning, before sitting down to eat, drink 2 tablets with a glass of water,
- 3 - daily dosage of 10 tablets divided into 3 doses one hour before meals.
Side effects and contraindications
Despite its effectiveness and naturalness, the drug has a number of limitations in use.
The fact that the sorbent can be given from infancy does not eliminate the drug from a number of contraindications, therefore, before using it, it is advisable to consult a doctor
According to the instructions, taking charcoal is contraindicated if:
- breastfeeding;
- ulcers in the gastrointestinal tract;
- erosion of the gastrointestinal mucosa;
- internal bleeding in the intestines, esophagus or stomach;
- individual intolerance;
- intestinal obstruction;
- developed osteoporosis;
- atonic or nonspecific ulcerative colitis;
- gastritis;
- predisposition to thrombosis;
- increased blood viscosity.
A negative nuance in the use of activated carbon is that it absorbs and removes from the body not only harmful, but also beneficial substances and vitamins. For this reason, if you drink it for too long, you may experience side effects such as:
- vitamin deficiency;
- anemia;
- lack of calcium, which provokes the development of osteoporosis and leads to dental problems;
- metabolic failures;
- constipation, which usually affects children;
- diarrhea (if the dosage is exceeded).
Like any medical product, activated carbon has a number of contraindications. Charcoal tablets should not be used if:
- Stomach ulcer;
- Duodenal ulcer;
- Colitis;
- Pancreatitis.
Side effect of the drug: absorption of both beneficial and harmful substances. If you take the medicine for a long course, this will lead to vitamin deficiency, a lack of minerals in the child’s body, and metabolic disorders. Therefore, carbon tablets are prescribed for a short term. It is important to drink plenty of fluids during treatment, otherwise toxins will not be eliminated properly and harmful substances will damage the kidneys.
Indications
The drug is prescribed to children for the following diseases : dyspepsia, flatulence, excessive secretion of mucus or gastric juice and to prevent and stop the processes of putrefaction and fermentation in the gastrointestinal tract.
Activated carbon tablets are also effective against poisoning, including toxins.
It is used during bronchial asthma, chronic and acute forms of hepatitis, liver diseases, cholecystitis, allergies and metabolic disorders.
As a preventative measure, it is recommended to take the drug during radiation and chemotherapy, before endoscopic and x-ray examinations to reduce intestinal gas contamination.

Analogs and price
Activated carbon has a number of analogues that have an absorbent effect:
- Atoxyl. Application: diarrhea, poisoning, dermatitis. Designed for children after one year. Available in the form of a suspension.
- Smecta. Active substance of the drug: aluminum and magnesium dioxide. Used from the first year of life. Used for diarrhea, increased gas formation, poisoning. The drug has a bright fruity taste.
- Lactofiltrum. The medicine is a preobitic that normalizes the intestinal flora. They treat children from 12 months.
- White coal. Recommended for children aged five years and older and adults; the drug is not suitable for infants. Treats diarrhea, used for poisoning and infections of the gastrointestinal tract, possibly used for allergic reactions.
Enterosorbents are available in pharmacies in a wide range, so if for some reason activated carbon is not suitable, you can choose a similar drug. For example, “Sorbex” or “Carbopect” are produced in capsules. Enterumin in powder form is enriched with aluminum oxide, which enhances its effectiveness.
- "Polysorb MP". Due to the presence of colloidal silicon dioxide in the composition, the drug effectively eliminates toxins and other harmful substances from the body. Produced in the form of a powder for the preparation of a suspension. The drug can be given to children at any age to eliminate symptoms of food poisoning, functional diarrhea, renal failure and other diseases.
- "Smecta". Due to the natural composition and safety of the drug, many parents trust it in the treatment of digestive and other problems in children of any age. The medicine contains aluminosilicate, which is also called smectin. The drug is produced in sachets, which contain vanilla or orange flavored powder for preparing a suspension. “Smecta” is often prescribed in pediatric practice to eliminate food allergies, as well as against the background of taking antibiotics to relieve vomiting, abdominal pain, etc. Generic versions of the drug are “Diosmectin” and “Neosmectin”, which are also produced on the basis of aluminosilicate.
- "Enterosgel". Available in the form of a gel based on polymethylsiloxane polyhydrate. The thick mass binds harmful toxins and removes them from the body without harming the digestive tract. The drug can be prescribed even to newborn children; it has virtually no contraindications or adverse reactions. Enterosgel is often prescribed for hepatitis, infections or intestinal dysbiosis, increased acetone, etc.
- "Polyphepan". The composition of the drug includes hydrolytic lignin obtained from the processing of coniferous trees. It also has no age restrictions for admission.
- "Enterodesis." It is produced in the form of a sachet with povidone-based powder. The drug is prescribed for the treatment of infectious pathologies, burns, renal failure, etc.

During this treatment, activation occurs with high adsorption and excellent catalytic properties. The porosity of the tablet surface is 15-97.5% by volume.
During production, stone and wood environmentally friendly coal and peat are used.
They are subjected to heat treatment in containers that do not receive air. Then a special treatment occurs to activate the resulting carbon.
Activated carbon is available in the form of black tablets . One standard plate includes 10 pieces.
Packed in sealed paper packaging. Instructions for use are not included.
