How to remove radiation from the body after exposure?

American exercise “Desert Rock” using nuclear weapons. 1951 Despite the fact that people have always lived in conditions of natural radiation, since the middle of the last century a new radiation threat has arisen from man-made exposure in emergency situations. This could be a situation involving the use of atomic weapons, an accident at a nuclear facility, or a terrorist attack using a “dirty” bomb.

In the event of such a serious threat, the population is most effectively saved by evacuation, although a number of medications can also be used. But rescuers and military personnel who will have to work in dangerous conditions must be provided with personal protective equipment, including various medications against the effects of ionizing radiation. I will try to describe a number of such drugs, called radioprotectors, and scenarios for their use in this article.

How to remove radiation from the body?

Radioactive decay products are dangerous to the health of any living creature. They have a destructive effect on the nervous and digestive systems, negatively affect the activity of enzymes, and contribute to rapid aging of the skin.

Also, radionuclides and heavy metals are quite difficult to remove from the body. Experts have proven that proper nutrition, following an appropriate diet, and periodic fasting have a preventive effect and help remove radiation from the body.

The process of performing computed tomography with contrast

Now let's look at how a contrast agent is introduced during a CT scan and how this study is generally carried out. The entire computed tomography scan using contrast lasts about 30-40 minutes, of which a maximum of 5-10 minutes is allocated for the administration of contrast, the rest of the time the doctor evaluates the data obtained and analyzes what he sees on the screen. There are three ways to introduce contrast into the body.

  1. For CT scanning of the stomach and intestines, the patient takes the contrast agent orally, swallowing it, after which it is quickly absorbed into the body, and because of this, the clarity of the image of the organs and tissues of the gastrointestinal tract immediately increases.
  2. If the clinic where the study is being conducted has a first-generation device, then the contrast is injected into the vein manually, which, unfortunately, does not allow you to regulate the speed at which it enters the body.
  3. If the CT machine is equipped with a syringe, then the contrast is injected into the vein through the blue route, which is why the rate at which the substance enters the body can be controlled in order to prevent side effects.

The patient himself, while his body is being scanned, must lie still, not move, not be nervous, and sometimes hold his breath, which he learns about with the help of light indicators.

Products that remove radiation from the body

The most effective method for cleansing the body of the negative effects of radiation is therapeutic fasting. If you want to protect yourself from radionuclides, follow a special diet, make sure that the following foods predominate in your daily diet:

  • almonds or walnuts;
  • lentils and oats;
  • apples;
  • beans;
  • pumpkin;
  • sea kale.

People who have received a certain dose of radiation must eat foods that contain fiber to successfully remove radioactive decay products from the body.

Diet for cleansing the body

Follow the following recommendations to achieve effective results in the fight against radiation, as well as to prevent contamination of the body with heavy metals.

  1. Before eating vegetables and fruits, thoroughly peel and remove 3 or more top leaves from cabbage, since most of the dangerous pesticides are contained in the upper layers of the fruit.
  2. Potassium-rich foods such as beets, dried apricots, apricots, as well as black currants, nuts, parsley, and seaweed prevent the absorption of radionuclides. Fill your diet with them.
  3. Drink milk, eat dairy products, especially cottage cheese. The calcium they contain reduces the amount of strontium in the body.
  4. Meat consumption should be limited. Beef, which contains the largest amount of radionuclides, can cause especially great harm to the body. When boiling meat, be sure to drain the first broth.
  5. Provide your body with fluid. So 265 ml of water removes about 1 gm of harmful substances. It is recommended to drink decoctions of prunes, flax, natural wine, vodka or alcohol in small quantities (if the liver is absolutely healthy). Juices with pulp absorb heavy metals and promote their accelerated elimination.

Be sure to take activated carbon tablets before meals. They must be crushed and the resulting powder sifted through a sieve. Then you need to mix the coal with water and drink the liquid every 15 minutes, 2 tbsp. spoons - the total volume drunk should not exceed 400 ml.

What are X-rays?

Roughly speaking, X-rays are a stream of electromagnetic waves. It can be compared to a ray of light, but only penetrating the body. The difference in the density of the structures gives the image on the picture or screen. The information obtained as a result of an x-ray examination is an important, and in some cases decisive, moment in the diagnosis of many serious diseases.

The ability of X-rays to penetrate the human body poses some danger to its tissues. Penetrating into cells, they affect molecules, promoting their breakdown into negative and positive ions. There are enough studies that prove the negative impact of this type of radiation on the molecular structure of living organisms.

And yet, the determining factor for the side effects of x-rays is not the fact of irradiation itself, but its duration.

The body is able to cope with the destruction caused by short-term exposure to rays on its own and without any negative consequences.

Most medical diagnostic methods that use X-rays use precisely this effect, when the radiation lasts for a fraction of a second. Therefore, the probability of getting cancer after a single x-ray examination is extremely small (approximately 0.001%).

Therapeutic fasting

Periodic refusal to eat gives an effective result and helps rid the body of the presence of heavy radionuclides. During fasting, cell division processes are weakened, and the enzyme system activates the active restoration of nucleic acid. This causes damaged cells to be repaired.

Therapeutic fasting improves the mechanisms for removing radionuclides, pesticides, and nitrates from the body. For people living in a polluted environment, it is important to periodically refuse food for preventive purposes.

Purpose of CT with contrast

As with contrast-enhanced MRI, contrast-enhanced computed tomography is performed by injecting certain substances into the body that improve the visibility of a specific area. Thus, a CT scan of the lungs with a contrast agent allows you to better see the lungs; CT scan of the abdominal cavity makes it possible to view the intestines, stomach, pancreas, gall and liver; A retroperitoneal CT scan allows for a better examination of the kidneys, adrenal glands, urinary tract, lymph nodes and blood vessels.

Such a study is carried out in cases where it is important for the doctor:

  • visually separate nearby internal organs from the intestinal loop;
  • conduct respiratory examinations;
  • visualize a tumor, cyst or inflammation of a particular organ;
  • diagnose the exact condition of blood vessels;
  • determine the degree of malignancy of a neoplasm in the body;
  • using CT with the introduction of a contrast agent, assess the condition of the internal organ before surgery;
  • diagnose the course of chronic or acute pathologies in the body that cannot be detected in any other way;
  • monitor the patient’s condition during ongoing treatment.

Cleansing the body from radiation using folk remedies

1. Method of Zh. Shishko

Fill 1/3 of a three-liter jar with coarse bran, pour in rosehip infusion and leave to infuse for 2 hours. Strain and drink the resulting liquid instead of water.

Fill a 3-liter jar with young pine shoots, cover everything with sugar or honey. Leave for 24 hours, take no more than 3 times a day, 1 tablespoon.

2. Bolotov serum

Pour 3 liters of purified water into a container, dip a bag of 20-30 chestnut fruits into the liquid, which must first be peeled and cut in half. Add a glass of sugar, half a glass of whey and a teaspoon of sour cream to the container. Infuse for 2 weeks, take the resulting drink for a month, half a glass before meals.

3. Getting rid of heavy metals in the body according to Deryabin

Mix the buds of pine, birch and a set of medicinal herbs (nettle, plantain, eucalyptus and others). 14th century Pour 3 liters of boiling water over a spoonful of the mixture and leave for 7-8 hours. Take the infusion warmed one hour before meals. Drink up to 3 glasses a day. Store in a cool place.

4. Eggshells against radiation

Due to the presence of silicon, calcium, and molybdenum in the shell, every biochemical reaction in the body proceeds more efficiently. Only domestic egg shells are suitable for this cleaning method.

The shell must be washed, dried, and then ground to a powder. Take the resulting powder 2-6 grams every morning with water and lemon juice.

Herbs for radiation

  • Recipe No. 1 – pour 3 tablespoons of chopped rose hips with boiled water (up to 500 ml). Boil and leave for up to 2 hours. Take 1 glass of infusion per day, with a teaspoon of honey.
  • Recipe No. 2 – 2 tbsp. spoons of chokeberry, pour 500 ml of boiling water, leave for at least 6 hours. Take 1/3 cup before meals.
  • Recipe No. 3 – fill a 3-liter jar with sea buckthorn and mint leaves, in a ratio of 2:1. Pour boiling water, leave for 6 hours, then strain and add 100 grams of honey. Drink no more than 3 glasses per day.

Contraindications to CT with contrast

However, this type of research is not suitable for everyone. Therefore, contrast should not be administered for CT scans of the abdomen, retroperitoneum, or lungs unless the risk of this examination would outweigh its necessity. Therefore, before performing a computed tomography scan with contrast, you should do a biochemical blood test and undergo an examination, so that the doctor, after analyzing all the facts, individually prescribes a CT scan. Particular attention here will need to be paid to the patient’s bronchial asthma, diabetes mellitus, allergies to seafood or iodine and the presence of severe diseases of the kidneys, liver, thyroid gland and heart, which may be relative contraindications for the study. But the main thing is that a direct contraindication to it is the patient’s renal failure - in this case, the doctor can only prescribe a CT scan without a contrast agent, because otherwise the risk of serious complications will be simply catastrophically high. In addition, the study cannot be administered to pregnant women and young children, and nursing mothers should refrain from breastfeeding for 24 hours after a CT scan.

Alcoholic drinks

Information is spreading across the networks that alcohol supposedly helps fight radiation. Water, wine and other alcoholic drinks do not treat or relieve symptoms of radionuclide damage. On the contrary, ethyl alcohol in combination with isotopes of radiation causes a double blow to the human body.

However, there is one positive point: ethyl alcohol will spread radiation to all systems of the human body, which will reduce the negative impact on one specific organ. Therefore, everyone who works in hazardous enterprises can benefit from alcohol and radiation by drinking a glass of red wine every day.

Consequences of strong radiation

The influence of prolonged exposure is detrimental to all organs and systems. During a radiation accident, the most tragic consequence is painful death. But with prolonged work in places with high radioactivity, the destructive effect occurs gradually.

  1. Radiation sickness. At a dose of 100 rad, the clinical picture is blurred. The symptoms are weak, the person seems to be in a pre-morbid state. A dose of more than 100 rad provokes the development of the bone marrow form of radiation sickness. 1000 rad is a lethal dose.
  2. Somatic diseases. They appear after several months or years. Patients are characterized by insomnia, depression, and fear of death. In women, it is accompanied by disruptions in the menstrual cycle and its pain.
  3. Stochastic effects are inevitable diseases after radiation sickness. These include mental disorders, cancer, developmental defects of future offspring, and infertility.

In the modern world, the effects of radionuclides on the body are quite small. With normalization of nutrition and high-quality prevention, they can be reduced to zero. But in any case, a person needs to know how to deal with radiation in case of unforeseen emergencies.

PET CT with contrast agent

Separate mention should be made of positron emission tomography, which is one of the newest modern CT techniques and allows the most accurate examination of human organs, helping to detect cancer in the early stages or during its development. That is why PET CT with contrast is most often prescribed to patients preparing to treat tumors of the lungs, head, larynx, tongue, intestines, liver, mammary glands and kidneys, as well as to treat melanoma and lymphoma. Indeed, with the help of such computed tomography, doctors are able to detect about 65% of cancer tumors.

In addition, this type of study is prescribed for problems with memory or the nervous system, to identify foci of epilepsy, to clarify the degree of development of Alzheimer's disease, to identify the presence of consequences of a heart attack, for coronary heart disease and to study cerebral circulation. In all these cases, tomography will help determine the treatment method and find out how effective it is.

This study is carried out in almost the same way as a regular computed tomography. True, here a contrast agent for CT scanning of the abdominal cavity or retroperitoneal space is injected into a vein 45 minutes before the start of the study, and all this time the patient must remain silent and not move. Then the patient is placed on a moving couch and sent to the scanner, the sensors of which begin to pick up signals that will be transmitted by the tomograph to the computer screen in the form of an image of the organ, on which the diseased areas will be highlighted in color.

Medical preparations for the removal of radioactive isotopes

People know about the properties of iodine preparations during irradiation. But the WHO warns that potassium iodide and other iodine pharmaceuticals are not a universal radiation antidote.

They can only help if radioactive isotopes of iodine-131 are introduced into the body. In other cases, uncontrolled use of iodine preparations leads to dysfunction of the thyroid gland.

One of the recommended iodine preparations is Detoxadine® - the drug is produced using unique nanotechnology. The drug is produced from a transforming bioelementary matrix based on glycerin, which softens the effect of iodine on the gastrointestinal tract.

Another radioactive isotope widely found in nature is cesium-137. Radiocesium is accumulated by algae, plants, animals, and fungi. In animals and humans, radiocesium is deposited in the muscles and liver.

Cesium is removed using sorbents, for example, barium sulfate, sodium alginate. Effectively binds 137 Cs into an insoluble compound and reduces absorption in the intestine of the Ferrocyanide sorbent. Potassium orotate reduces the accumulation of radiocesium isotopes.

To accelerate the elimination of 137 Cs, various complexing agents are used, for example, diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA) and ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA).

Preparations with calcium and magnesium effectively reduce the absorption of strontium-90. Radiostrontium enters the environment during nuclear weapons testing and accidents at nuclear power plants. 90 Sr is an analogue of calcium, therefore it accumulates mainly in bone tissue and teeth.

Calcium and magnesium preparations “displace” radiostrontium. For example, Dr. L. Polling found that IntraCal, a combination of calcium orotate and magnesium orotate, reduces the accumulation of 90Sr by 90%. The drug is used in rehabilitation therapy after radiation irradiation of cancerous tumors.

To reduce the effects of X-ray irradiation and exposure to radioisotopes, dimethyl sulfoxide is used, a strong antioxidant used in the form of a solution (trade name Dimexide). The drug inhibits the pairing of the original DNA molecules and prevents the accumulation of damage in them, blocks the formation of negative radicals in cells under the influence of radiation and prevents their damage.

Natural sources of substances that help cleanse the body of radioactive contamination are clays, for example kaolin, red clay, green French clay, bentonite, montmorillonite. Bentonite clays have binding, absorption, and catalytic activity.

Enterosorbents are effective drugs for reducing the amount of radioactive isotopes entering the gastrointestinal tract. Activated carbon is able to absorb and remove almost an equilibrium amount of toxic substances (10 g of carbon removes about 7 g of toxic substances).

The drug Germanium-132 is used to improve immune status in the treatment of many diseases. Japanese scientists have found that a drug based on organic germanium:

  • increases oxygen transport in tissues;
  • shows antitumor activity;
  • increases immunity.

Japanese scientists have found that the anti-radiation activity of Germany-132 is due to its properties similar to the functions of red blood cells. Organic germanium also has the properties to induce γ-interferons, which prevent the proliferation of rapidly dividing cells, activating T-killers, stimulating the radioprotective functions of the lymphatic system.
